A marked shortwave will swing northwards across Scotland on Friday morning, engaging with a high Theta-W plume over the North Sea. This could bring an increased risk of elevated thunderstorms over the North Sea which may graze Shetland on Friday late morning / midday, before clearing to the north - a low-end SLGT (25-30%) has been introduced.

Elsewhere, while convection and showers are likely, much of the activity will be rather shallow in depth and therefore the risk of lightning is very low (<5%) - except perhaps the NW Highlands and Harris/Lewis where deeper convection is likely. Overnight, the broad upper trough base will swing eastwards across Britain and Ireland, and cooling aloft will allow some slightly deeper convection to occur bringing the risk of a few isolated lightning strikes - more especially close to western coastal counties, but even here the risk in any one place is considered quite low (10-15%).
